Call the shrink: Reducing space wastage in the kids’ room

Your child’s room should have as much free movement space as possible, and this begins with creating adequate storage space.

Your child is a bundle of joy and endless wonder. Every day, they learn something new as they explore the world around them and get information at school. Their bedroom is their favourite space in the house – after all, it is their private sanctuary. It is where they study, play, watch movies, eat and rest.

So it is up to you to clear the room of clutter and leave a lot of the floor bare for your kids to move around on. Confused ab

out how to do this? Here are a few kids’ room décor ideas to get you started:

* Pack it away, out of sight.

Your child’s room is going to get messy in no time, but don’t blame your kid just yet. Have you created enough storage space for their toys, books, shoes, bags, video games and other things that they require daily? Create stowaway storage where your child can put everything away after use, and which keeps all these items out of sight and the floor bare.

* No monsters, just storage under the bed!

The space under the bed can be put to excellent use as a storage area. It is particularly useful as a kids’ room decorating idea. Include pull-out drawers mounted on smooth metal channels, or create shelves and shutters. You can put away extra bedding, towels and even a small box or two under the bed. If it is easy to operate, your child can use the storage space under the bed by themselves without your help.

* More than one kid? Consider a bunk bed.

If you have two or three children, then the issue of their bed is quite a contentious one. Each kid will have a preferred ‘side of the bed’. One kid may like to read with the lights on, the other might like to listen to music before hitting the sack. So why force them to put up with each other’s habits? Install a stylish bunk bed in a corner of the room. The obvious advantage of saving a lot of floor space aside, a bunk bed gives you scope for personalising each child’s sleeping area. Consider these elementary kids’ room décor ideas: wall mounted reading lights, a plug point next to the pillow to charge headphones or portable music, the pillow and mattress of the child’s liking, and pull-away shelves next to each bed to function as a nightstand.

* A ledge for a study table.

Instead of installing a bulky study table, or two of them if you have two children, use one wall for a long ledge. The ledge can function as the study top, and the space underneath can function as storage for their books, school bag and other stationery.
